Firm news|September 20, 2024

Roschier is enhancing and strengthening its cross-border capabilities within its Complex Construction practice, reinforcing its commitment to comprehensive support in demanding construction projects. Our practice offers specialized advisory services across all phases of construction, from initial planning and permitting to full project implementation, ensuring management of every legal aspect to promote seamless and compliant project delivery.

Serving both domestic and international clients, we manage large-scale construction projects including wind farms, data centers, and commercial real estate developments. Our team of experts, with extensive experience in energy, industry, infrastructure, and real estate, has successfully handled major construction projects across the Nordics. We are dedicated to guiding clients through each stage of their projects, whether it involves planning, project financing, or dispute resolution.

In this article, our partners Lisa Hybbinette, Miikka Konttinen, Marcus Hedén and Toni Siimes provide insights into our practice and discuss the benefits of our strengthened cross-border cooperation.

Can you describe in a few words what the Complex Construction practice does?

We believe that our Complex Construction practice would best be described as a Nordic one-stop shop when it comes to construction projects. The expertise of the team is very multifaceted, which enables us to cover all angles of a construction project. Our practice advises clients in a wide range of construction-related matters such as planning and permitting, procurement strategy and project de-risking, drafting and negotiation of construction contracts, project financing, contract and claims management and dispute resolution. To summarize, our clients can feel comfortable in that our practice has the proper expertise and experience to handle whatever construction-related matter they bring to the table.

What do you expect from strengthened cooperation in this area?

We have seen a high demand for cross-border expertise in respect of the legal aspects of construction projects; for example, it is common that agreements for large construction projects are heavily international in nature and the supply chains typically extend beyond the national borders. In addition, the major projects undertaken in the Nordics share many common characteristics, often involve same or similar stakeholders and stand to benefit from lessons learned from one another. We are able to offer our clients a full Nordic view on the developments in this industry and comprehensive cross-border legal services of the highest quality.

How are the legal services tailored to address the needs of specific sectors, such as energy or commercial real estate?

Our expert teams have deep industry sector specific knowledge whether from process industry, energy, commercial real estate or infrastructure. One of the unique strengths of our practice is the ability to combine sector specific knowledge, a broad Nordic view of similar projects and deep regulatory expertise on key permitting questions to one integrated delivery.

What advantages does the team’s experience in the Nordic construction market offer?

We have the privilege of regularly working with the most prominent developers and owners within infrastructure, industry, energy and real-estate sectors, hence the experience of our practice ranges from more conventional large-scale infrastructure and real estate projects to cutting edge first-of-its-kind construction projects (such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage). The team’s experience and expertise solidify our position as a one-stop shop for Nordic construction projects.

Roschier continuously invests in this practice, and we have  recently further strengthened our team by recruiting three additional senior associates specialized in this field, Emil Samuelsson, Lilian Vo, and Prisca Betesta.

What are the current trends in this area?

Apart from projects relating to the green transition (such as wind-farm developments, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and new sustainable materials), we see quite a lot of activity within residential developments and data center developments.
